Home Improvement Is An Investment For Life ? Tips To Make It Easy

Before doing anything further to the room, paint to avoid further complications. It may be wise to paint your walls before getting new flooring. Drop cloths and tarps are unlikely to prevent all paint spill from marring your new floor.

Consider improving little things around your home like minor landscaping, or replacing an old mailbox. When choosing a mailbox you should find one that compliments your home?s exterior. You will have to check on the city guidelines when you are installing a mailbox. This quick job takes about a couple of hours.

You need to check your gutters on a regular basis, especially if you live in an area with a lot of trees. Stopped up gutters are one of the chief culprits for flooded basements. They cause water to drain down the sides of the house. Always clean your gutters of leaves and debris to prevent this.

Rely on your creativity and unique personality to design original projects. Your personal touch will greatly enhance the look of any home improvement project.

When fixing up a house for re-sale, you need to deal with the outside first before working on heating and plumbing. Items such as plumbing or heat will not be immediately noticed, while a good exterior look will help you get more out of the house in terms of value.

Try a landscaping project to bring a new look to your home and your yard. A good accompaniment to your property would be adding pretty flowers, mulches, plants, vines, shrubs and some nice stones to give an updated look to your landscape. The overall value of your property can be increased with the landscaping of your yard as well as providing a great focal point to impress visitors.

If you are thinking about doing home improvements make sure that your potential contractors have the proper state licensing. This information is available on your state?s official website. You can also place a phone call to the state department that handles these matters. An unlicensed contractor is a sign that they did something to lose their license, or are just a scam artist.

Build a toolbox with your neighbors that everyone can borrow from, you can also save some money. There?s a good chance that you can borrow tools that you will seldom need, rather than purchasing them. You can even trade tips with your neighbor.

Simple lampshades can be very boring with no personality. Use some basic stencils and paint to give your boring lamp shade something extra. You can give life to your home, as it can take away the boring environment you previously had.

Work from the inside out when improving your home. Plumbing and electrical repairs often require inner wall access, so plan these repairs first before you paint walls or do renovations. If you already have your walls opened up for other repairs, why not take care of plumbing and wiring at the same time?

If you notice what seems to be a hole used by mice, fill it with a ball of steel wool. Mice will not be able to bite through this, so it will stop them from coming in until you can get to work on a permanent repair.

Padding sharp furniture is another great way to improve your home and keep your children safe from harm. You can protect sharp furniture edges by using foam tape or buying specific child safety corner protectors. One of the things that you need to do when taking on a home improvement project is to fasten down loose wiring when working, to make sure your children are safe from a potential strangling hazard.

Don?t rush through a project. Meticulously follow your plan step by step, and try new things if the current plan isn?t working out. Many people have gotten great home improvements completed this way, and so can you. The techniques in this article will show you how to effectively do any home improvement project.

Allow me to ask you, do you believe the bit others say about ?recently discovered? when speaking about eco-friendly house? All you do will be in vain if you fail to power washing tips the first time. Once in a while the biggest discoveries are looking you in the face.

The Story Of Flint Police Operations, A Group Saving A Crime-Ridden Michigan City With Social Media

social-justice-1SHOTS FIRED=2700 blk Eaton Place, 6 shots heard, nothing seen.#Flint. It’s just another night in Flint, Mich. A concerned citizen heard gunshots and called 911. That’s where the story used to end. There is a shockingly low number of police officers in Flint. The department was gutted over the last 10 years. That 911 call will likely go unanswered. But now, through the power of social media and the tweet above, a neighborhood is at least on alert. Flint is a proud city. Auto workers first sat down for their rights in Flint. Tanks were built on Buick’s lines to battle Hitler. But as Michael Moore documented, the jobs left. Now, 30 years after Moore himself left, there are even more empty factories, neighborhoods, and with them, lives. But there’s plenty of crime to fill the void. That’s where 21-person strong Flint Police Operations social group comes in. They’re aiming to restore Flint. Social media is their tool of choice.

Western Union debuts WUPay digital platform, misses the point of convenience entirely

Image

Modernization’s not for everyone — just take a look at Western Union. That 19th century institution’s finally getting its virtual act together, introducing a new digital payments platform today, dubbed WU Pay, that sadly does not involve laundering dough through the late, great ODB’s hip hop clan. No, this forward-facing system, built upon its eBillme acquisition, takes a backwards approach, eschewing direct payment options for something more circuitous. Customers that opt-in for the service at checkout from any number of partnered merchants, like Kmart or Sears, won’t have to link to their credit card accounts or even offer up any financial info. Instead, once the item is purchased, they’ll receive a bill via email that can then be paid online or at one of the company’s brick-and-mortar sites. Sound unnecessary to you? We sure agree. Now if only this innovation involved Marty McFly and Jason Alexander personally delivering those funds — that’s a service overhaul we can get behind. Check out the PR after the break.

Santorum ad appears to link Obama, Ahmadinejad

By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign appears to have released a new video that subliminally links President Barack Obama with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The video, titled “Obamaville,” is a 65-second-long production that presents bleak images of an America in dire economic and social straits, interspersed with scenes of international unrest. Prominent among those is a segment showing images of protests and violence in Iran, featuring pictures of Ahmadinejad. It doesn’t include the mandatory “I’m Rick Santorum and I approved this message” tagline that would be necessary if it were intended to air on television.

The video was posted Friday on the Santorum campaign’s YouTube page, where it was marked as “unlisted,” meaning you can’t access it without a special link. But you should still be able to see it on a Twitter account identified as belonging to Michael Biundo, Santorum’s campaign manager.

Biundo didn’t respond to a request for comment Friday night.

The ad also was published by National Review Online, which touted it as an exclusive “first look at Rick Santorum’s latest ad.”

At the 40-second mark, an image of Ahmadinejad is shown on a small TV screen. For less than a half-second, the picture flashes to a similarly framed picture of Obama before returning to the Iranian dictator.

At full speed, it looks like a tiny video glitch or small lightning strike, but if you slow down the video, the image of Obama is clear in individual frames:

Reached by NBC News on Friday night, Hogan Gidley, a Santorum spokesman, said it is “absurd” to think the ad is likening Obama to Ahmadinejad.

“If Ahmadinejad gets a nuclear weapon, then we’re obviously going to deal with the fallout and coverage of that,” Gidley said. “All we’re going to be seeing is images of him and the president. We were trying to illustrate that.”

And Politico reported that John Brabender, the media consultant who made the video, also denied there was an attempt to conflate Obama and Ahmadinejad. Brabender told Politico that the video is part of an eight-part web series that will run on the Santorum website in two weeks focusing on specific Obama policies.

The ad in some ways is reminiscent of one produced by the Republican National Committee for George W. Bush in 2000, in which the word “RATS” briefly appeared on the screen in a reference to Al Gore’s health care proposals before resolving into the word “BUREAUCRATS” at the 25-second mark.

Here are the frames in question:

YouTube.com

That ad was pulled after Democrats complained that it was a subliminal insult about Gore, a charge that the RNC and the Bush campaign denied.

NBC News’ Andrew Rafferty contributed to this report.

OVERNIGHT ENERGY: Republicans rain on Obama?s Keystone parade

State of play: Republicans worked Thursday to undercut President Obama?s attempt to regain control of the narrative over the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

In a barrage of statements, television interviews and news conferences, Republicans dismissed Obama?s energy tour as a public relations stunt.

?Today he?s out in Oklahoma trying to take credit for a part of the pipeline that doesn?t even require his approval,? House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told reporters.??Now this is what I?m calling the Obama energy gap.?

Obama, during a speech in Cushing, Okla., promised to expedite a federal review of the southern leg of the Keystone pipeline.

But Republicans cast the move as a smokescreen to distract from the president?s January decision to reject a key permit that would have allowed developer TransCanada to build a section of pipeline across the U.S.-Canada border.

The GOP also argued that the president?s call to expedite the review will do little to speed up construction of the pipeline segment. TransCanada has said it plans to begin construction on the southern part of the project in June.

White House press secretary Jay Carney dismissed Republicans? criticisms, arguing that the president?s decision to expedite the pipeline segment will ensure it doesn?t get bogged down in ?unnecessary bureaucratic delay.?

?I understand that the president?s critics want to make a political point, having been deprived by the facts and the visuals of this visit ? which demonstrated the president?s commitment to both increasing oil and gas production in this country and doing everything he can to open up bottlenecks in the supply chain for oil-and-gas production ? to find some other reason to criticize him,? Carney told reporters Thursday afternoon aboard Air Force One.

?The fact of the matter is, even the southern portion of this pipeline requires federal permitting. The actions the president took today will ensure that that process is ? moves as quickly as possible as a matter of ? as a national priority. So, yes, we believe it will have an impact, and certainly at the very least it ensures that there will not be any unnecessary bureaucratic delay.?

Carney said the administration will ensure that TransCanada is able to begin construction in June, as scheduled.

He added that the administration will begin reviewing the rest of the Keystone pipeline once TransCanada re-files its application for a cross-border permit.

?When a renewed pipeline proposal is put forward, it would be absolutely viewed on the merits,? Carney said. ?And the process should be allowed to work as it?s supposed to work, and it should not be hijacked for ideological or other political reasons.?

Obama rejected the cross-border permit in January, drawing the ire of Republicans. But the president said the decision was based not on the merits, but on a GOP-backed 60-day timeline included in broad legislation to extend the payroll tax cut.

NEWS BITES:

Thune: Oil tax vote shows Dems are ?desperate?

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said the upcoming vote on Democratic plans to nix oil industry tax breaks is a sign that they?re losing ground in the battles over gasoline prices.

?I would be surprised if they have success with that, but I know they are desperate to find something to use as a distraction to shift the blame away from where it clearly should be, and that is on policies that have not permitted and enabled additional energy production,? Thune, chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, told reporters Thursday in the Capitol.

The Senate will vote Monday on the plan, which lacks 60 votes but represents a Democratic effort to force Republicans into a politically tricky spot by casting them as industry defenders at a time of high prices and profits.

Sanders pushes Obama on Keystone pipeline

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) remains hopeful that President Obama will reject the cross-border Keystone XL pipeline to bring Canadian oil sands to Gulf Coast refineries, even though Obama is pledging to expedite the Oklahoma-to-Texas portion of the project that would carry U.S. oil (see??State of Play??above for more about that).

?For the future of the planet, we must break our dependency on fossil fuel and move to sustainable energy, and the Keystone pipeline just weds us to fossil fuels and a particularly dirty form of fossil fuel for years to come,? Sanders said Thursday in the Capitol.

?I hope the president will do what he can to defeat it.??

Sanders pointed out that temperatures smashed records by hitting 80 degrees in Vermont this week, among a number of U.S. temperature records falling of late.

?I think global warming is absolutely real,? he said.??One of the outrageous aspects that goes on in Congress now is the degree to which we choose to ignore it.?

Christians gather to bid farewell to Egypt’s Pope

CAIRO (Reuters) – Christians paid final respects on Sunday to Pope Shenouda III, who spent the last months of his four decades at the head of Egypt‘s Orthodox Church trying to soothe sectarian tensions that have escalated since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

Ten of thousands queued at the cathedral where Shenouda’s body was initially laid in a coffin and later seated on a ceremonial throne wearing gold and red embroidered religious vestments, a golden mitre on his head and holding a gold-topped staff.

The lines blocked traffic in central Cairo and some women and elderly fainted in the heat. The cathedral opened and closed its doors several times in an attempt to contain the crowds.

Two people were killed in the crowding, medical sources said. One suffered a heart attack and the other, an elderly citizen, died of exhaustion.

Mubarak, who suppressed Islamists, was ousted last year. Since then Shenouda, who died on Saturday aged 88, often called for harmony and regularly met Muslim and other leaders.

Christians, who comprise about a tenth of Egypt’s 80 million people, have long complained of discrimination and in the past year stepped up protests, which included calls for new rules that would make it as easy to build a church as a mosque.

Christians have accused hardline Islamists of attacking churches and said the authorities have failed to step in to protect them, although experts say some recent incidents have been fuelled by local grudges as well as sectarian tensions.

Shenouda had served as the 117th Pope of Alexandria since November 1971, leading the Orthodox community who make up most of Egypt’s Christians. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, Egyptian state media reported.

CONDOLENCES OFFERED

Interim military rulers paid tribute to the church, visiting the grounds of the Orthodox Coptic Cathedral in Cairo. Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi who Mubarak handed power to promised to air lift Shenouda’s body to where he will be buried.

U.S. President Barack Obama offered his condolences and Pope Benedict, leader of the world’s Roman Catholics, offered prayers after being informed of his death.

“I would like to express to the members of the Holy Synod, to the priests and to the faithful of the Patriarchy, my strongest feelings of fraternal compassion,” said Benedict.

Describing Shenouda as a long-time advocate of unity among Christians, he said the Catholic Church “shares the pain afflicting Orthodox Copts.”

Shenouda was popular among many of Egypt’s Christians even outside the Orthodox Church, as well as among many Muslims. However, some Christian activists said Shenouda should have pushed the state harder to secure more rights for Christians.

In one phrase Shenouda often repeated and which was also cited in newspapers on Sunday, he would say: “Egypt is not a nation we live in, rather it is a nation that lives in us.”

The burial is expected to take place at the Wadi el Natrun monastery in the desert northwest of Cairo, where the late pope had requested he be buried.

Shenouda was banished to Wadi el Natrun monastery in 1981 by then-President Anwar Sadat after he criticized the government’s handling of an Islamic insurgency in the 1970s and Egypt’s 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Under Mubarak’s rule, relations between the government and the Coptic church were generally smooth, with the pope portrayed in state media as a symbol of religious harmony, despite occasional outbreaks of sectarian violence.

RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE

“We will remember Pope Shenouda III as a man of deep faith, a leader of a great faith, and an advocate for unity and reconciliation,” the U.S. president said in a statement issued by the White House.

Obama said Shenouda had been committed to national unity and was “a beloved leader of Egypt’s Coptic Christians and an advocate for tolerance and religious dialogue.”

Shenouda publicly supported Mubarak during his last days and before Mubarak’s ouster by a popular uprising on February 2011, a move that drew some criticism from some members of his church who joined the protests that ousted the president.

Some Muslim leaders also backed Mubarak in his last days.

Bishop Bakhomious, head of the church of Bahaira, a district in the Nile Delta north of Cairo, will temporally hold the post of pope for two months until a new leader is elected.

Egyptian media described the procedure for choosing a new pope as one based on a system of voting by board members of the church’s city councils. The councils vote on three preferred candidates, and the final choice is made when a name is picked out of a box by a young child, the media said.
